warm weather memories

There is nothing like home grown tomatoes, especially from your own back yard. As a kid, we would always have an overabundance of them from my dad's little garden. And each summer, my mom would slice them up with crackers for us to share for lunch.....it is one of my favorite memories.

Nothing special...just crackers, tomatoes, salt and pepper.....
and a little mayo for hers...

I've been doing the same thing forever....and have passed it on to my own family...I can't help but smile when they make it themselves to share with each other....

especially when they save one for me

There is nothing better than a 'mater sandwich! Zack loves tomatoes, just chopped up with salt and pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. But my oldest son will not eat a fresh tomato for anything. One of my favorite snacks when I was little was Saltines topped with lemon pepper and fresh lemon juice. I remember going to my neighbor's house to eat it -- an older woman who had a chihuahua. As for the heat, I figure we are closer to hell than any place on earth. Ha! Hope your day is a good one. Tammy

We had a very large garden when I was growing up. My Grandparents raised me and we lived the country life. My Grandfather and I used to tend to the garden every summer. He loved telling the story how I used to carry a salt shaker in my back pocket during the summer. That way I could go into the garden and pick cucumbers and tomatoes and eat then right there in the garden. My oldest two love tomatoes but my youngest will not touch them. He used to eat crackers with mustard. I can no longer tolerate tomatoes and I sure do miss them.

Oh! That sounds yummy - I'll have to try it, since I lurvs me some fresh tomatoes, preferrably right off the vine and hot from the sun. I have to admit that my mom also made a favorite Saltines snack when I was young, but her version involved a Saltine, some mini marshmallows, and some coconut - popped under the broiler. LOL - not quite as healthy as your version ;-)
