I had to turn verification and moderation on again due to advertising loafers and robots.

You know, I used to get a lot of spam comments until Mariette at Mariette's Back to Basics told me to turn off one little thing in my settings and that fixed everything. Don't remember what it was now but if I find it, will let you know. No need for verification when you have that setting checked or unchecked, whichever it was. :)
